Homegrown: Neil Young's infamous "lost" album

Neil Young has pulled the plug on many an album at the 11th hour, but "Homegrown," originally scheduled for a 1975 release, has achieved special status amongst fans. Unfortunately, copies of this legendary "lost" album are not circulating, at least not outside of Young's "inner circle." There isn't even a consensus on what the final tracklisting was since Young, as he so often has, moved onto another project before he finished the one he was working on. Noted Dylanologist Clinton Heylin once dubbed Young "the king of the lost album," which, considering the quality of the prospective "Homegrown" tracks, is especially apt.

Many of the original "Homegrown" tracks were in fact eventually released on other Neil albums. Some were re-recorded for later albums and some are only known through live performances. Several of the songs remain unheard by fans, but have been discussed in various articles and interviews over the years. It is possible to approximate the real deal by "rolling your own," assuming, of course, one has access to a decent live/outtake collection. Here's a rough guide to what's what:

NOTE: this is by no means an attempt at a definitive tracklisting for "Homegrown," merely an attempt at a "master list" of various songs that may have been possibly slated for inclusion on "Homegrown." Remember: an official tracklisting was never released by Neil, his associates or the record company; the only thing ever reported was a possible title for a release following "Tonights the Night." Any reports to the contrary are pure speculation no matter how authoritative they may sound.
