Mood Swings new album No Limit hits stores today

No Limit
, the new CD from hot Minneapolis garagerockpoppers The Mood Swings, is now for sale in Twin Cities stores and at the Susstones Shop.

This joyous event will be celebrated with a free CD Release Party at The Hexagon Bar in Mpls this Friday, June 15 with help from Sideways and Mercurial Rage.

Fresh pub from City Pages:

Some groups just can't help but bleed pop hooks, even when those
sugary-sweet melodies come wrapped in barbed-wire guitars. Starting with a '60s garage-rock sound and then filtering it through the fishnet stockings of everyone from Joan Jett to Elastica, the Mood Swings are getting set to unleash a six-song follow-up EP to last year's Come On Tell Me. No Limit has tracks that come at you with a snarl, then blow you a kiss, like the guitar-and-organ-driven "Want Need Love," but the title track shows off a talent for expanded atmosphere. Loon calls and rumbling thunder open the tune, and even when the distorted guitars drop in, it's a finer grind, sleeker and darker than you might expect from the Mood Swings. Expect them to blow down the back wall of the Hexagon (would that make it the Pentagon?) and to look good doing it.
Free. 9:00 p.m. 2600 27th Ave. S., Minneapolis; 612.722.3454. (Steve

New Sideways MP3 @ Susstones

Fresh on the heels of a sneak preview of the first new Sideways music in a long time last Friday at the Mood Swings/Mercurial Rage CD Listening Party, comes even more new Sideways coolness, "Dugout" -- described as "another storming Hammond-led, fuzz-driven number from the imaginary mod combo."

MP3 of "Dugout" available here.

And, if that isn't enough good news, Sideways will be making a rare live appearance on June 15 at the official Mood Swings CD Release Extravaganza.

Two new Sideways tracks in less than a week...life is good.

Mood Swings CD Listening Party recap... + Sideways world premiere!!!

Well, it's a little tough to get the wheels turnin' this morn, thanks to the successful Mood Swings/Mercurial Rage CD listening party last nite at Brit's Pub in dt Mpls. A good time was had by all -- the ragers and the swingers combined forces for a supercool socio-musical event in the new "Clubhouse Bar" at Brit's, a world-class addition to an already top notch facility. Great food + great libations + great people + great tunes + great swag = one hella good time. For sure.

There were many musical highlights -- great sets from DJs Christian Fritz & Dalida and Sussed vet DJ "The Guv'nor" plus, of course, the new releases from Mercurial Rage and The Mood Swings spun in their entirety. But the biggest surprise was the world premiere of the first new Sideways track in many a blue moon. Sideways/Polara sidekick "Knobby" was in the house and hinting that everybody should stick around for a "surprise." Well, lo and behold, the surprise was a hot-off-the-desktop new Sideways concoction -- a kickin' instrumental version of labelmates The Mood Swings' classic "Come On Tell Me," done up in patented Sideways futuro-retro-mod-rock stylee. Uber cool if you ask me.

This bodes very well for the next Sideways live appearance -- always a rare treat in its own right -- at the Mood Swings' CD Release Party on 6/15 at the Hex.

"Sussed-tacular 3" bash @ BLB - Mpls - Jan. 23

Hot off the press from Susstones Central Command:

=================================

We’re celebrating the three-year anniversary of Sussed! at the Bryant-Lake Bowl with Sussed-tacular 3 on Tuesday, January 23rd.

The BLB Theater will be the scene for a fast-moving two hours of music featuring (in no particular order):

The Melismatics
The Mood Swings
Astronaut Wife
Ed Ackerson
Marc Perlman and Janey Winterbauer
Sideways

DJ sets throughout the evening from Marc “Guv’nor” Mueller and his Sussed! crew.

Additional surprise musical guests may be conjured if / when appropriate

In the tradition of previous Sussed-taculars and Susstones Soirées, Susstones artists and fellow travelers will perform short sets of tunes and collaborate / mutate in new combinations. Average set length will be about 15-20 minutes, perfect for the already supercharged sounds of The Melismatics and The Mood Swings. The show features a very rare solo showing from Ed Ackerson of Polara, who will be previewing a few of his new non-band songs. Marc Perlman and Janey Winterbauer will bring their new luminous, atmospheric tunes to the stage. Other rare birds on sonic display include instrumental outfit Sideways and the recently reinvigorated Astronaut Wife.

In appreciation of all the support the community has given Sussed! at BLB, this event is ABSOLUTELY FREE and open to anyone 18 or older. The show runs from 10 to midnight sharp, so come on out and help celebrate Sussed! with some fine live pop music.

Polara "Guest Sessions" gig in St. Paul - 10/23

Guest Session Sundays featuring Polara
at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul
Sunday, October 23rd, 2005
Doors at 7 PM

Two sets by Polara featuring guest appearances from:
Astronaut Wife
Kraig Jarrett Johnson
The Mood Swings
Sideways
Scott Laurent
Marc Perlman
Dan "The Plate" Boen
Tim Oesau
DJ Marc "The Guv'nor" Mueller
with a finale by The Susstones Omniphonic Orchestra
....and other local luminaries to be announced

Polara is pleased to be taking part in the Guest Session Sundays series presented by 89.3 The Current at the Fitz in downtown St. Paul. The setting of this show in this great sounding, good vibing venue gives Polara opportunity to explore new collaborations and present its songs in an expanded musical framework. The band will present two sets of music starting at 7:30. The first set will consist of electric and acoustic performances by the band's core members Ed Ackerson, Jennifer Jurgens, and Peter Anderson, joined by bassist Marc Perlman (Golden Smog, Jayhawks) and a rotating cast of instrumental collaborators. The second set will stretch beyond Polara's traditional lineup and catalog, introducing a fun and diverse array of guest musicians and singers. Here's the currently-confirmed roster of the band's noisemaking friends for the night:

Astronaut Wife- Susstones electronic pop faves Astronaut Wife return to the stage after a two-year absence especially for tonight's show, with Polara adding its backup might. Various members of AW will also be chiming in on vocals and keyboards during the first Polara set.

Sideways- Ed Ackerson's instrumental combo, featuring Peter Anderson, bassist Kraig Jarrett Johnson, Tim Oesau on keyboards, and Blake Hurlbert on percussion. First live Sideways performance in a year!

The Mood Swings- This very exciting fuzzed-out girlpop band has been causing quite a stir locally in the last months. They'll play a few songs tonight in an expanded lineup including members of Polara. The Mood Swings will also be helping out on guitar, electronics, singing and percussion during the Polara set. Look out for the new Mood Swings album Come On Tell Me on Susstones November 8th!

Kraig Jarrett Johnson- Singer, guitar slinger, songwriter for The Program, Golden Smog and Iffy, Kraig is a longtime friend of everyone in Polara. Kraig will do a song or two of his own in addition to adding his "music" during Polara's set

Scott Laurent- Noted local songwriter with a huge heart and a monster set of pipes, Scott will sing and strum a couple of never-before-heard Ed Ackerson numbers with the band.

Tim Oesau- Ace keyboardist for Sideways and the Scott Laurent Band, Tim will bring his deft textural touch to the table with Sideways, Polara and the rest of the gang.

Dan "The Plate" Boen- Polara alum Dan Boen will bring his own special brand of electrolove on Theremin and synthesizer, in addition to playing bass with the Mood Swings.

DJ Marc "The Guv'nor" Mueller of the weekly music club Sussed! will be spinning records at the beginning of the evening and also during the between-set interval.

The Susstones Omniphonic Orchestra will close out the show with the sort of orgiastic sonic bliss that makes nights like this so unique.

The Fitzgerald is a great place for Polara to present this evening of new sounds and fun creative combinations. This show promises to be one of the most memorable ever for this ever-evolving band and its array of guest artists.

Sussed-tacular! - live Susstones event next Tuesday in Mpls

As some of you Twin Citians may know, the Susstones record label (Polara, Faux Jean, Melismatics, etc.) has a DJ event every Tuesday night at the Bryant Lake Bowl in Minneapolis where a host of DJs - including Ed Ackerson - spin a wide variety of very cool music.

Next Tuesday (6/29), Susstones will be offering up "SUSSED-TACULAR!" a special live music event featuring:

The Mood Swings -- a hard rockin' power-fuzz trio who have been ripping up local stages recently. Special "celebrity" bassist for this performance only.

The Melismatics -- one of the best live acts currently performing in the upper Midwest. If you like the first two Cheap Trick albums (pre-Budokan), you'll go nuts over these guys. A special "acoustic" performance.

David Poe -- everybody's fave Lower East Side pop bobo, this talented and charismatic sweetie always puts on a great show and is a major FOJ (friend of the Jayhawks) to boot. Rare acoustic performance featuring new material from his superb upcoming album "Love is Red."

Sideways -- This is Ed Ackerson's futuristic / retro side project, an instrumental combo that will be playing tunes from 2002’s excellent Sideways CD, “Oblivion and Points Beyond.” Blending several ‘60s genres (mod, pysch, R&B, acid rock, Brit blues, spy film soundtracks), with Ackerson’s unique vision and always superb axe work, a Sideways show is like getting lost in the world’s best record collection circa 1968. This will be an extremely rare live outing -- only the third public Sideways performance ever. And check out the killer band: Peter Anderson and Kraig Johnson (who play alongside Ackerson in The Program), keyboardist Tim Oseau and former Jayhawks roadie, Blake Hurlbert on percussion. Completing the trip will be interactive visuals from CoLab.

Also: the usual “Sussed” DJ sets before and after the music plus a strong likelihood of a “special guest” or two or three.

Doors at 9:30; music from 10pm-midnite in the intimate confines of the Bryant Lake Bowl Theater (capacity <100). Located in the heart of Lyn-Lake on Lake St., a block west of Lyndale (and just a few blocks east of Uptown). Tickets will be cheap ($5 or less).
